What can we discover when we feel lost?
I’m not the first person to say this — thankfully — but we were made to feel scared of getting lost. It’s this paralyzing experience. Maybe you’ve once told yourself, “I’m so behind. I’m failing.” Maybe what you wanted, ended up not working out and you’re saying, “I’m back at square one. I don’t know what I’m doing with my life.” Grief, depression, and anxiety can swallow us whole when we notice we’ve veered off our imagined and desired paths.
What if this didn’t have to be the case when we get lost? What if we soothed the part of us that’s freaking out, ask it to hang out for a bit so we can listen more deeply to what’s around us, and experiment being cartographers of our own lives? We just don’t know what we’re going to discover. I guess I’m talking about optimism. It’s scary to find ourselves lost, and I can’t help but ask, where do we go from there? Do we rush into a decision because we’re attached to the knowing world? Or is there a possibility in which we can connect to the unknown? There is freedom in getting lost — truly, what do you have to lose?
